glowdirt

America's Test Kitchen also concluded that Rao's is the best of the ones they tested https://www.americastestkitchen.com/taste_tests/1858-jarred-pasta-sauce

olivegardengambler

Tfw the Walmart brand is the solid value option. I'm honestly not surprised Hunt's is at the bottom. It's shitty ketchup.

Unrighteousvoid

It takes a bit of trial and error, but I've found alot of Walmart brand foods to be a solid value option and in some cases superior to the name brand. GV frozen pizzas are a good example of better and cheaper than name brand, IMHO. Also, I kinda like Hunts brand sauce because it's so flavorless. I add whatever spices and seasonings I am in the mood for that particular day and don't have to worry about wasting a well seasoned sauce.

Porcupineemu

A lot of Walmart’s brands are identical to the name brand and made on the same line, with the same ingredients and just a packaging change.

Porcupineemu

I used the right one though?

Jkoasty

Yes but not the naughty person before you

DownvoteAccount4

Dang it, you did. Don’t Reddit before the coffee kicks in.

PM_MeYourAvocados

Yeah the pizzas I have had are were pretty good. Reminds me I just need to buy some to have on hand.

CPGFL

I believe the Walmart brand won the BBQ sauce edition of these blind tests

Joliet_Jake_Blues

Hunts canned tomatoes are always near or at the top of the list, and their ketchup always beats Heinz in taste tests

glowdirt

Really? I've always known their products to be watery garbage

Joliet_Jake_Blues

They use steam instead of lye to peel the tomatoes, so they don't get the metallic taste canned tomatoes get. American Test Kitchens does an annual taste test with their teachers and students and Hunts usually wins

tenemu

I always bought Classico sausage because that’s what my parents always bought. I saw some post on Reddit about how good Raos was so I tried it. It wasn’t for me. But I bought a few others and I really enjoy bertollis roasted garlic. I gotta try the Trader Joe’s one now.

Caylennea

I love the aldi tomatoe basil marina, I wonder if it’s the same.

jish_werbles

Trader Joe’s is my go-to. Cheap too

cincymatt

I usually get Classico spicy basil.

Adezar

Used to use Bertolli for quite a while, then found Rao's and switched and never looked back. It's just really good.

syn-ack-fin

Victoria and Michael’s of Brooklyn are really good as well.

1spdstr

Victoria is my favorite, surprised it didn’t make the list.

wannabestew

Me too! It’s almost all we buy

Abazableh

How in the world are Prego and Ragu above/tied with Classico?! Those are the worst sauces and I actually like Classico. Sure it's not the best but Prego and Ragu are terrible.

Bedlemkrd

Aldi has the best spaghetti sauce marinara is in the same type of jar with color shift on cap and label still really good.

Robbeee

Scimeca's is the correct answer for number 1.

ed900036

Rao's is great for making spaghetti squash casserole. It's expensive, but awesome.

bordergirl6

Mezzetta is my favorite when it comes to jarred marinara. My grandma's recipe (the version I make at home) will always be my favorite tho.

BarnyardTickleTime

Their frozen lasagna fucking slaps, too. My wife can't cook for shit and works from home. The single ones on sale for $3 or $4 and a bag of steam fresh veggies save my ass when I don't have time to meal prep something good for her.

garbagephoenix

I've only ever had one jar of Rao's and kind of thought it sucked. Maybe I need to try again. I'm kind of surprised Mid's didn't make the list, it's one of my favorite brands.

dotnetdotcom

There is not much difference in taste between the Rao brand and cheaper ones like Prego and Ragu.

babytigertooth005

Rao’s is one of the few brands I can find that makes “Sensitive Marinara” - no garlic or onions which is great for anyone on the FODMAP diet. Their pasta sauce is my favorite. Edited because-words

Nchi

Meh, the research needs to be re done on garlic /onion, it's a noticeably missing ingredient and personally if you roast the onion /garlic enough it neutralizes my fodmap issue, highly suspect it can also be reintroduced via powder, it's really, really obvious taste wise.. I have 5 jars I got on clearance lmao

No-Cupcake370

Came here to say this :)

[deleted]

Maybe not technically a “supermarket option,” but the Kirkland Signature Organic Marinara at Costco is better than Rao’s by a mile, imho. (Cheaper, too, I believe.)

QuarterSwede

Costco’s definitely is surprisingly great.

donscron91

Is it surprising when Costco makes something great, all their stuff is fire as hell!

QuarterSwede

The jeans, lately, have been trash. And I meant it more in a way of, most marinara doesn’t taste like what you expect. Theirs does.

More_Cowbell_

Lol, Rao's at my local Safeway was over $8 last I remember, which is why I've always wondered what it tasted like. Thanks for the Kirkland tip.

stinkbugsinfest

9 dollars here. I’m not spending 9 bucks on tomato sauce. Trader Joe’s is great!

mpwalters

This was the most challenging part of the article. I think Rao's was the most expensive by 4x over other options. I believe it's great but have a difficult time paying so much. The Trader Joe's option was #2 and $2 or so. I don't ordinarily shop there but do shop at sister store Aldi. I wonder if there's a complimentary Aldi version.

lacksugarcoating

Never had Trader Joe’s, but Aldi Specially Selected Marinara has been my go to since the first time I walked into an Aldi

stripmallsushidude

Best value sauce for high quality, period. Cheaper per unit and just as good as Rao's. I just got back and saw flavors I haven't yet seen - gardiniera, roasted garlic, portobello mushroom. It's up to $3.99 now but I'm 40 and won't eat cheap crap any more (all tomato paste-based sauces...).

anonkitty2

A discount warehouse option.

BrawlerAce

It's delicious. Came pretty close in taste to homemade sauces I've made in the past.

entropic

And Costco has Rao's too, at least mine does. ~$13 for 2 28oz jars and they go on sale lower than that quite frequently.

mbourgon

Personally I like the Rao’s and the ingredient info says fairly low in carbs, too.

mysterious_whisperer

It’s good that the thing you pour on a pile of carbs is low carb.

mbourgon

The spaghetti squash and Japanese soy noodles never know what hit them!

dis6wood

I like mezzetta spicy marinara

BeautifulHindsight

We call that the good sauce!

D_Is_For_Dave

Same! House favorite.

stickybandit06

Newmans own should be higher.

roguestate

Newman's Sockarooni is delish.

Saint_The_Stig

Truth, I generally go for Newman's in general because it's not Nestle, usually pretty good and the charity aspect. But really their stuff ends up being the same or better then others I've tried.

keysey224

I love it on Italian sausage!

the_sky_is_on_fire

That's my absolute favorite but I haven't been able to find it in years now! If they're still making it, there's hope

roguestate

It's still for sale in MD as of last week! :) (though maybe I should check that expiration date)

roguestate

[New label, but bought it today. ;) ](https://i.imgur.com/RZomgZg.jpg)

papanugget

How the hell do you guys afford Rao's when it's like $9-10 a jar??

dookieruns

Buy it at Costco. It's $5 a jar on a typical sale.

starfries

Yeah, it might be good but I can get twice as much of something that's almost as good.

lewright

I only buy it every once in a while, compared to eating out it's not that bad of an expense.

the_mars_voltage

Just make your own. Canned tomato paste or the stuff in the tube is way cheaper and you just need to add a couple other ingredients and combine them in a pot before adding your pasta

garbagephoenix

Most of the time I buy any sauce (I kinda cycle between Classico [the mason jars are useful and the sauce ain't bad imo], Bertolli, and Mid's, with the rare Ragu), it's because it's what's on sale this week.

SushiThief

I read that as "marijuana sauce" and I was so confused.

oxfordcircumstances

Me too and when I read the list I nodded my head in agreement that of course Rao's had the best marijuana sauce, because their marinara sauce is also the best. I just figured it was infused or something.

Duryea1959

Me too!!

AtonalApe

Another year where my Nona gets overlooked.

harambetidepod

Believe it or not krogers generic pasta sauce is very good.

DJHickman

It better be. It costs more than Martin Shkreli brand printer ink.

gordo623

Tried Raos, not for me it’s not...

Apprehensive-File370

Rao’s is pretty good but at $13.89 a jar, I just can’t justify it. I’m perfectly happy with Classico or simply making my own from scratch if need be. Edit: although I really like Rao’s pizza sauce. Would buy again.

gordo623

I prefer anything by Classico over Raos

[deleted]

[удалено]

garbagephoenix

Classico's fine, but the first one I reach for is their roasted garlic.

rcarnes911

Rao's is good it tastes like my homemade sauce and it's cheaper than making it

jwink3101

Rao's really is amazingly good. And super simple ingredients! It should be so easy to duplicate and yet nobody else is close!

mrsdoubleu

Yeah and it's also almost $10 a jar where I live. So I guess I'll stick to Newman's Own Sockarooni.

Alhazzared

How is something homemade when it was actually made in a factory?

Joliet_Jake_Blues

People live in the factory, duh

glowdirt

Home is where the [industrial canning machine] is

garbagephoenix

I'm no expert, but IIRC if enough of it is made by a person as opposed to machine made, it can still qualify as homemade.

fake_fakington

I need some sleep - I read that as "marijuana sauce" and was like "hol' up, they gots weed sauce now?".

Franky4Skin

Weird, all the big name brands are at the bottom

prex10

It’s a taste test. It’s just some dudes opinion.

Franky4Skin

Homeboy is a bot

robo-tronic

You wanna go to Sizzler with me after this and put ketchup on our spaghettis?

ToeFondler

Weird that you think thats weird.

Boilers_Varsity_Golf

Not surprised by the top two

TheMissingCurlyQLink

Too much salt. 420mg per 1/2 cup. I used it for a lasagna and the salt was overpowering.

marysuewashere

Nooooo. I make the best sauce. I grow yellow lemon boy tomatoes and genovese basil in my garden. The mason jars of beautiful golden yellow yumminess will last until the next crop starts ripening in the spring.

4445414442454546

And you sell it in supermarkets?

CJPrinter

Lucini Organic Roasted Garlic blows every single one of these out of the water.

mafiamasta

I recently bought "Michaels of Brooklyn Marinara Sauce" and was astounded with it. Easily the best jar sauce. Personally I think better sauces are easily possible in jar form. We just need to demand it!

MongolianCluster

Not surprised to see Trader Joe's rank highly. Excellent sauce for a really reasonable price.

emptysignals

Bertolli is the best.

WolframLeon

Rao makes everything good.

JimAsia

"My mother/grandmother/aunt" according to every Italian I have ever asked.

caterpillargirl76

Aldi makes a good Rao's dupe for $4 and Meijer's sauces for $2 are really good too.

Cosbycomedy

If you add a little extra olive Oil to the Aldi marinara it’s basically Rao’s

CulturedClub

Came to the comments to get some Redditor Nona's home recipes. Was disappointed :`(

Thausgt01

Heh. Kal-el stifles a grin at "Rao's" sauce...
