I'm not saying what Medea did to the kids was right, but Jason deserved everything he got. Medea's back must have been sore after carrying him through most of their adventures.
So true. Jason gave up the best partner he possibly have, for a dime a dozen princess. Like how many royal families were there in Greece at the time? Like a few hundred? How many Medea's? One.
Also, even though she had a bad reputation. All her actions had the approval of the Gods. Jason was an oathbreaker to Hera; Medea could do whatever she wanted to Jason.
Apparently her murdering her children was a creation of Euripides in his play *Medea*, and not part of the original myth. (You've probably read it already, but if not I recommend it. It's structured like other tragedies, so when you get to the point where Medea has murdered her children the structure strongly suggests that she's going to face consequences for her actions. Instead, she fucks off in a magical chariot.
I heard about that in the [episode on the play Medea of the Literature and History podcast](https://literatureandhistory.com/index.php/episode-033-woman-the-barbarian), it's kind of funny how even in ancient Greece Euripides still managed to get a reputation as a misogynist. That's quite a feat.
From what I've seen though, Euripides' retcon ending is the one people know best, so you can't really stand up and say "Medea did nothing wrong!" without someone being like "*Weeellll*..."
I love how she got Aegeus to agree to shelter her in Athens and then was like "Fuck you, and you, and ESPECIALLY YOU" and then bounced, knowing full well she already had Aegeus's word to allow her to stay there no matter what she did.
I think it's hard to interpret what Euripides was trying to do, which is why nobody can agree if Euripides was a misogynist or not. In the play, Medea is much more sympathetic than Jason up until the point she decides to murder his children. Then she does it, and gets away with it. "Fuck Jason, he had it coming" is as plausible a reading as any. I guess any sufficiently well-written work the author loses control of the message, so the play has many different readings.
"Latte" and "Mocha Filter Drips", which are Greek phrases meaning "The editor cornered the author and demanded a name while they were in the staff break room getting coffee."
HAHAHAHA PLEASE NO. I JUST RECENTLY GOT OVER THEIR NAMES THAT SOUND LIKE THE AUTHOR JUST GOT LAZY AND NAMED THEM THINGS FROM THEIR KITCHEN. 😭😭 HAHAHAHAHA MOCHA FILTER DRIPS.
Tbh I love the subtle meaning behind Melissa's name the most. Honeybees tend to get a bad rap and be feared/hated for their sting, but they're essential for a healthy, thriving ecosystem, surprisingly cute when you take a proper look, and are known to protect their queen (Yuri). ❤
I'm reminded of the fact that you're not supposed to feed infants honey until they're older (I think at least 1.5 years +?) because depending on the pollen used it can be poisonous and fatal for the infant.
That's without a doubt partially the reason I'd bet hahahaha. Adding an extra vowel or something to other names. But often they draw from existing mythology or stories. Also words have meanings and names are derived from said words. There's an entire study about the origin of words and how they have changed: etymology
It's fascinating seeing the links between many modern languages and their roots in often latin or greek language due to the spread of knowledge via trade.
Lady baby is weird. It starts off feeling compelling “I need to correct the past of massive horrible tragedy” then after a couple years the FL seems to decide to go off and become a taboo singer instead which seems to have nothing at all to do with the original plot or stoping the horrible tragedy.
I quit, maybe it gets better?
Judith is derived from the Hebrew name Yehudit meaning "woman from Judea", "praised". Also a feminine form of Judah.
The story revolves around Judith, a beautiful widow, who is upset with her Jewish countrymen for not trusting God to deliver them from their foreign conquerors. She goes with her loyal maid to the camp of the enemy general, Holofernes, with whom she slowly ingratiates herself, promising him information on the Israelites. Gaining his trust, she is allowed access to his tent one night as he lies in a drunken stupor. She decapitates him, then takes his head back to her fearful countrymen. The Assyrians, having lost their leader, disperse, and Israel is saved. Though she is courted by many, Judith remains unmarried for the rest of her life.
(This is from the Book of Judith which was originally written in Hebrew or in Greek. Wikipedia says that it's not in the Hebrew Bible and the Greek manuscripts with the story have anachronisms, so ultimately it's considered non-historical by some Protestant scholars.
All in all, the name is Hebrew)
"By the 14th century...Rabbi Moses Isserles, on the Shulchan Aruch, the Jewish Code of Law, even recommends eating cheese on the holiday [Chanukkah] in honor of Judith."
Yehudit is part of our oral histories, but not written ones (unlike Esther)
Tbh, I kinda want to read her story in a visual medium, it has many of the similar concepts as OI
I love when authors specifically choose the names they give their characters; it adds depth and and you can rlly see their personalities thru their names.
I read your throne on Indonesia translation and Medea's last name is belliard. Idk did they do this on purpose cause Solon and belliard are Verry far from each other
I thought her name calliope was meant to be an eggplant 💀
LMAO, HELP, WHY IS THIS SO FUNNY?😭💀
;o did you know the the UK word for eggplant is Aubergine?
I feel like there’s a FL somewhere with that name…
Original surnames of Medea and Psyche are Belial and Polli. Belial is the devil in Hebrew mythology, but I haven't found what Polli is from.
