I’ve been here for a month, what do I do?
By - j-rnw
I just arrived here two weeks ago. Meetup for some groups and everyday I go and explore a different part of the city.
Btw, library has pass to the museum and zoo ( you have to check out a book)
Thank you ! I’ll stop by, even if it’s just for the zoo pass, lol.
This is the book you have to checkout to get the zoo pass.
I would recommend the art museum pass. Good way to save some money and explore the museum.
[TravelOK](https://www.travelok.com/) lists all kinds of events for all over Oklahoma... concerts, food festivals, street fairs, garden shows, boat shows, art showings, wine tastings, etc.
Thank you so much
Meetup.com and volunteering
I’m on meet up. All of the groups I’ve joined haven’t met at the time they say 😓
That sucks! I hope you find some that are more dependable soon.
My husband and I moved here a few years ago and it’s been tough finding friends. The people are friendly enough, but we’re empty nesters who are still pretty young at heart. All the people we know our ages are either wrapped up in their kid’s stuff or just want to stay at home and get older.
It’s been especially tough for me because I’m only in my late 40’s and had a big group of close friends that I used to socialize with. If I wasn’t with them, I had a house full of teenaged gamer boys that kept things interesting. I definitely miss all that teen energy and outlook on life.
I don’t know if you’re M, F, or NB but if you would like a foul mouthed “cool aunt” figure who likes zoos and museums, coffee, whiskey, but also bakes cookies and shit, let me know.
Absolutely! I’m F, I love zoos, museums, educational anything and am absolutely open to someone “ taking me in”
Sweet! Sent you a message.
Tabletop gaming groups are pretty fun and diverse. They meet in OKC and edmond.
Where would you find more information about these groups?
Oklahoma Tabletop Gaming Club on Facebook. I think their Edmond meetup is at Showbiz cinema right now. Vaccine proof or mask required last time I went.
Damn I don’t have a Facebook
You can go to any gaming store in the metro and they’ll give you information about when and where their gaming groups meet up. There’s GameHQ in South OKC, Edmond unplugged in downtown Edmond, wizard’s asylum in Norman, DZ Comics in Moore and the Labyrinth I think it’s called also in Moore.
If you are working downtown you should check out the big friendly brewery. Tuesday and Friday they have a taco truck and just last night they held a bike race called "the crit" was a lot of people out and about in a very friendly neighborhood. Located just south of the Ferris wheel in the wheeler district
Okc astronomy club
Take up Film Photography there are photo walks where you can go around meet people.
Can you tell me more about this?
[https://www.facebook.com/oklahomaphotowalks](https://www.facebook.com/oklahomaphotowalks) has some listed basically you learn how to shoot photos walk around with like minded people who like film or photography. there is an analogue FB group as well [https://www.facebook.com/groups/okviewcameras](https://www.facebook.com/groups/okviewcameras)
Very cool! Thanks!!
Sadly the easiest way to meet people is drinking with them here. Hit up nights were there's sports on tv. If you like liberal crowds check out good times, blue note, Hilo, or the other room. If you like the gays, the neighborhood has a pool that's open to anyone. Price of omission is one drink. Good luck.
What makes them liberal crowds???? Not trying to start anything or accusing I'm generally interested in reaaon and been to few of those.
21-35 young professionals with tattoos that played in a band one time. They don't have that okie accent and its a wider range of diversity plus a lot of lbgt crew. full of servers too, so you gotta be nice since they handle your food.
Ahhh. Okay thanks!
I understand this. If I had gay friends, or middle eastern, I would want to avoid the more Yee Yee type places…. Though that is really just a stereo type. Most establishments seem diverse and accepting regardless.
One or two places that push hard core right wing stuff on the TVs and wall art… but those are scarce.
If you like plays Lyric Theatre puts on great shows with broadway caliber performance. Alums include Kirsten chenoweth and megan mullaly
Thank you so much ! I’ll look into that.
If you play or want to play indoor soccer that's a fun way to meet folks. Soccer City on the NW side of OKC is just starting up their 8 week co-ed league play season again. The have a range of competitive levels from beginner to scholarship athlete level play. You can join a house team so you don't have to worry about knowing anyone.
DM me for more, but I’d highly recommend going and sitting at Evoke(not as good anymore) or Coffee Slingers(downtown OKC) or Elemental(downtown okc)
People are really friendly and you can ask them. Also if you’re at a place enough, that the staff recognize you, they’ll treat you like a friend as long as you’re not weird and hitting on them.
Every city I’ve ever been this works. OKC is one of the easiest because we’re all friendly here.
> we’re all friendly here.
Thank you all so much. Extremely helpful.
Metro Family magazine is a good place to look for family friendly activities.
Wow, you got a lot of responses. I spent 2 years living alone and frequently traveling between okc and Edmond in my early 20s.
My favorite thing to do was bike, even though okc cycling kind of sucks. Google maps shows up to date bike trails.
You could volunteer at the okc animal shelter. The dogs there spend all day inside and need exercise. They let you take them out walking/running after going through 2 hours of training. You don't necessarily have to do other stuff like poop duty if you don't want to. I would keep beef jerky in my pocket on runs and share with the dog, not sure if this was allowed though.
My favorite cheap food places were:
B&Gs used to do $5 burger and fries weeknights.
Sauced had excellent cheap spaghetti Thursday nights.
Lee's $5 sandwiches
Oasis Cafe is amazing.
It's hard to get a seat at Cafe kacao, but they sometimes have space for loners at the bar; the food is GOOD and inexpensive.
There used to be a biking group that met at big truck tacos every weekend.
I went to the chess club meetings at garden cafe a couple of times on Saturday afternoons. It was fun even though I'm bad at chess, and the bookstore there is beautiful. I've been playing online since then and have got up to 1900 lichess.
Man, compared to Dallas I love cycling here. I've been here for work since early July and I love that I can do a 30-40 mile loop almost entirely on trails. We have trails at home but they don't really connect and if you want to do distance you're limited to doing laps around White Rock Lake.
That being said, I hate that some of the main trails essentially act as sidewalks, which means I have to use crosswalks. Last week I was seriously about 6 feet away from getting creamed by someone running a red doing 50+ on 39th and 2 days before that got my rear wheel tapped by a guy trying to turn right when I had the walk sign. That being said, there seem to be way more accessible trails here that run throughout the city and a lot of them (especially the river trails and Heffner) are in great shape.
I mainly didn't like that the trail connecting Hefner and the river just puts you by 44 for 5 miles. Most of my rides were from midtown to Hefner and back; usually I would go through the suburbs to make it a loop route.
You’ve just given me so much to look into. Thank you!
Edmond Unplugged, DnD Nights.
Born and raised in Oklahoma, please accept my apologies.
Not much out here but smoking lol how old r u I could help more if I knew interest
If you're here for school, join a school club or introduce yourself to your classmates. Have courage to say you just moved here and are looking for things to do regarding ____ (interest/ hobbies you enjoy). You can ask them for recommendations, and maybe striking up the conversation can lead to an invite to eat lunch or hang out!
