I’ve seen these markings on similar Finnish stalhelms. I can’t speak to the authenticity, I’m not an expert, but it does look to be in very good condition for its age.
the liner is in ok condition for being quite old, but it looks as if it didnt render in the photo because of shade but there's quite a few stains on leather part facing the front
It is actually a Hungarian made M38. The helmet was made in Hungary for export to Finland. Liner, straps are all Finnish. Finland received 75,000 during the war.
The reason you can tell it is Hungarian M38 is Hungary is the only country to use this type of connector on the back of the helmet. It was made to have a leather strap that attached to the belt for carrying.
I think it’s a Finnish contract m42 style helmet if I’m not mistaking. I’ve seen these on IMA. Kind of a cool history behind them, and also I believe some of these were actually Made in the same factories as the German ones in WW2. Pretty cool.
In truth, it really does. The US even got a lot of criticism for using a similar shape until recently.
The fact is, it provides a great deal of protection to the head and neck while not inhibiting vision.
It's **Vilson**, from the German remake of the 2000 Tom Hanks classic, Cast Away.
Seriously though, it looks like a Finnish 4th Div. (KevOs4 unit) M40/55 helmet, with the famous Winter War Skull.
The were operational during both the Winter and Continuation wars and listed as operational right through to late 1944, though I don't have details on which ops they participated in. Wiki is sparse on fillings too.
It's an overlooked part of the war.

I would watch the shit out of a dark comedy version where instead of tom hanks its a bumbling nazi.
That’s a genuine helmet, but it’s had the Finnish skull marking painted very recently. There’s a cottage industry churning those out for Americans to feed the Finnish fetishization in a segment of the militaria community.
Definitely post-war liner though. Looks like it was repainted as well. Considering it had to be somewhere in the storage to have that-i'd say that sadly someone took the liberty of painting the skull on it it after WW2.
Hungarian M38 with with Finnish Skull and Bones.
The helmet is original, I'm not sure about the paint.
IMA sells repainted originals like this

It is [Hungarian m35/38](http://brendonshelmets.weebly.com/finland-m3538.html) that was made for Finland.
thats pretty interesting, i assumed it was german due to the stalhelm style
A lot of WWII European helmets seem to share the general Stahlhelm shape
Even Switzerland! Their equipment and arms from that period look very similar to what their neighbors produced.
I wonder why that is? Maybe the Stahlhelm shape had an advantage

That is very true
That's a Hungarian M38, not German made. The hook on the back was strictly a Hungarian thing.
