Anyone seen it? Is it good? I'm down for some Chinese cinema.
Its fucking bullshit that when googling it, instead of imdb ratings and reviews like i get for any other film, I just get links to trash articles calling it propaganda and crying that it beat western films in the box office.
check out The Sacrifice (2020). China is surpassing US on all fronts
It's pretty good from what I heard some mainland chinese leftist do have a problem with it using a celebrity cast saying it commercializes the revolution but still its a good movie
It also has the best rendition of the Internationale I've heard
Hey if CPOP idols can get a bunch of teenage girls to watch communist media (especially if they are outside of Mainland China) then I am all for it. Anything that can weaken Hollywood's stranglehold on the world is a good thing.
Exactly, as long as they are good actors there shouldn't be any issues with it
they aren't though, the problem is that a lot of young celebrity actors get paid ridiculously high wages for doing nothing and that a lot of their backgrounds often have criminal or illegal enterprises behind them. 革命者 is a lot better
Ok most don't have criminal backgrounds at most drug use but I do agree the idols get paid way to much for what they do.
So are you saying 1921 is a bad movie?
Criminals are cool
Whatever works is right. So my niece is a huge Kpop fan and I got her to watch [this](https://youtu.be/Olg0L4ptE4o) 100 year celebration song by the Chinese member of Kpop group EXO…the one constantly cancelled for being a pUpPet WeE geR mAsS mUrDeReR for being youth government ambassador and openly supporting one China.
Anyway, shes 15 and typical white American Catholic private high schooler with a very vocally Republican father who watches Ben Shapiro for news and thinks the death of Rush Limbaugh made the planet worse off. Still half way waiting for news of his head physically exploding or that I’m no longer allowed within 5 feet of her. Either way I’ll be expecting my check for new recruiting any day now.
I feel like that's one of those things too, where a lot of celebrities are still good actors, so if you want people who can act it may be worth it.
I'm not at all familiar with the Chinese film scene though so there may have been other options for the producers to choose.
Which rendition was the one you were talking about? There were several in the film
Douban 豆瓣 says the Pioneer is better rated, same subject, and came out the same day.
> Of course, “1921” is the beneficiary of special attention from the local film authorities, who cannot allow it to become a box office failure. In the past, other patriotic films have been boosted significantly by purchases from civil servants and schoolchildren ordered to attend, favorable scheduling, manipulated ratings, longer runs and other measures to save the government from the unacceptable political embarrassment of a flop.
>Given a lack of competition, “1921” actually topped the Chinese box office last weekend with $11.6 million off previews alone. Conveniently for a country fond of numerology, the 100th anniversary film managed to break the RMB100 million ($15.5 million) mark in pre-sales on Wednesday afternoon, with hours to go before its official debut.
Actually terminal levels of cope. Anyways, I’m quite eager to watch it once I can get my hands on it.
The West just wants China to make wuxia films.
Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio are probably waiting for one about Chang the mythical conservative warrior 🥴
More like Jimmy and Josh the mythic generals that overthrew an evil dragon 😂
>In the past, other patriotic films have been boosted significantly by purchases from civil servants and schoolchildren ordered to attend, favorable scheduling, manipulated ratings, longer runs and other measures to save the government from the unacceptable political embarrassment of a flop.
Totally not the same thing Christian organizations do to boost their shitty ass faith based movies.
what does “favorable scheduling” even mean? as opposed to only showing a movie at 3 am or something?
Random term that requires no source because it's proably true based on common sense practices that sound scary when they're about cHyNa
Oh my god! Evil China is showing their movies when people are actually free to watch them, instead of airing the movie at 1 am on a Wednesday night? How terrible!
lmfao can you even *imagine* the headlines if they did have a 1 am wednesday showing?
“Oppressive CCP Regime Forces Citizens To Celebrate 100 Years Of Dictatorship With State-Mandated Sleep Deprivation In Show Of Totalitarianism, Forces Them To Watch Propaganda Films All Night; State Department Warns That Movie Theaters Are Latest Venue For Genocides”
Or if no one showed up because it's 1 am in the morning:
"Oppressive CCP losing support as citizens show defiance by getting some goddamn sleep before work starts the next day instead of staying up till 1 in the morning to watch a movie. Could this be the next tiananmen square? Authorities in China attempt to boost numbers with free popcorn, but it will not be long before people are forced into the theaters at 1 am by horde of tanks"
hahaha that’s nearly too good, i don’t think we want to let Gordon Chang see this lest he write another book
Don't insult agent Chang like that. He's doing our work for us. We should be grateful to him /s
> schoolchildren ordered to attend
I'd bet dollars to donuts this is referring to the exact same circumstances under which I was "ordered to attend" Mel Gibson's *Hamlet* in my English lit class. In other words, the teacher was showing it in class, and you're supposed to show up for class.
>In the past, other patriotic films have been boosted significantly by purchases from civil servants and schoolchildren ordered to attend
when I was a kid, we had school trips to cinema to see [Katyń](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katy%C5%84_(film\)) and [Battle of Warsaw 1920](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Warsaw_1920), when they came out. I heard they also dragged children to show them fucking [Smoleńsk](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smolensk_(film\)) lmao
Telling the story of the 99% and the suffering masses is propaganda. Ignoring the people the history and only focus on white billionaire class is entertainment. Got it.
Yep, telling a story about the hardships Chinese people had to go through against colonialism is clearly government propaganda. Oh, an American film about a sniper killing civilians in Afghanistan? That's called patriotism, look it up sweaty.
American Sniper also immediately came to my mind the moment I read "propaganda film".
Top Gun? Just some cool dudes playing volleyball.
In an insidious way, yes. Hypernationalism and military worship are just so engrained in American culture that they become a default backdrop for any media to exist on.
ah, Transformers is literally 'US military sponsored' kind of a movie, lmao
all the f22, aircraft carriers etc
Silver Iron Man arrives a US army base:
\*Puts patriotic music\*
Never watched Transformers but I heard there was a scene where the Autobots invade an Iranian nuclear base
Ah yes, that scene in just “the Middle East” if I remember correctly.
Sweaty dudes in Jean shorts lol
Hmm yes, the volleyball scene...
‘It is a story about a man’s struggle with his own homosexuality. It is! That is what Top Gun is about, man,’ Sid says at a party in a movie-stealing cameo.
‘You’ve got Maverick, all right? He’s on the edge, man. He’s right on the fucking line, all right? And you’ve got Iceman, and all his crew. They’re gay, they represent the gay man, all right? And they’re saying, go, go the gay way, go the gay way. He could go both ways.’
Sid is now on a roll and continues: ‘Kelly McGillis, she’s heterosexuality. She’s saying: no, no, no, no, no, no, go the normal way, play by the rules, go the normal way. They’re saying no, go the gay way, be the gay way, go for the gay way, all right? That is what’s going on throughout that whole movie..’
‘He goes to her house, all right? It looks like they’re going to have sex, you know, they’re just kind of sitting back, he’s takin’ a shower and everything. They don’t have sex. He gets on the motorcycle, drives away. She’s like, “What the fuck, what the fuck is going on here?”
‘Next scene, next scene you see her, she’s in the elevator, she is dressed like a guy. She’s got the cap on, she’s got the aviator glasses, she’s wearing the same jacket that the Iceman wears. She is, okay, this is how I gotta get this guy, this guy’s going towards the gay way, I gotta bring him back, I gotta bring him back from the gay way, so I’ll do that through subterfuge, I’m gonna dress like a man. All right? That is how she approaches it.’
‘All right, but the REAL ending of the movie is when they fight the MIGs at the end, all right? Because he has passed over into the gay way. They are this gay fighting fucking force, all right? And they’re beating the Russians, the gays are beating the Russians. And it’s over, and they fucking land, and Iceman’s been trying to get Maverick the entire time, and finally, he’s got him, all right?
‘And what is the last fucking line that they have together? They’re all hugging and kissing and happy with each other, and Ice comes up to Maverick, and he says, “Man, you can ride my tail, anytime!”
And what does Maverick say? “You can ride mine!”
I just noticed that most American movies that used to be very popular in the past are literally propaganda. See Top Gun, Rambo, Rocky 4, and Full Metal Jacket for an example
Full Metal Jacket was absolutely a criticism. It wasn't praising the Vietnam war at all
yes i agree, it was ahead of its time imo
Yes, but the people who saw it were Yankees, most probably think it’s ‘cool military beats primitive commies’ movie.
I hope I never meet someone who saw it like that haha the helicopter scene alone is horrific enough for me to make me not ever wanna re watch it
I once showed Full Metal Jacket to someone to talk them out of joining the military. And it worked.
A lot of movies claim to be anti-war, but they still make being a soldier look brave, exciting, and heroic. Full Metal Jacket does not.
Considering it isn’t even as brutal as the reality it portrays, there are plenty of vets who would still look at it as ‘totally-unfortunate-innocent-not-genociding-non-war-criminal victims of commie invasion on definite American territory traumatised by the evils of communism and \*insert Asian racial slur here\*’.
The YouTube comments on that scene are disgusting. This stupid fucking country
the scene shows the other soldier puking. how more on the nose can you get?
I know at least three people who think like this.
Anti-war movies have their own place in western propaganda. It helps cleanse the American conscience, getting them primed for the next war.
It's like their religious confessions. Once they confess, it's easier to sleep peacefully at night, and prepare themselves for the next immoral act.
That's why their anti-war stuff generally happen years after that particular war has no more use. Full Metal Jacket was released in '87. Vietnam war started in '55. That's 32 years later, a full generation.
Full Metal Jacket wasn’t an American movie. It was made in Britain by a British production company.
Can't recommend [this talk by uncle Parenti](https://youtu.be/S33DKRcqvkQ) enough
It's not just the past, it's as true today. It sometimes doesn't look as obvious.
Any popular tv show I've watched is pure propaganda, Homelands, The Americans, Handmaids Tale, etc.
Even if you leave politics aside, there is the usual, "look how awesome America is" , "our soldiers are brave", "everyone is living in nice houses", etc. All these plays a big part in the way non-Americans view America.
I've noticed that among younger Iranians here. They all believe Americans live in nice suburban houses, big lawns, big houses, etc.
How is Rocky 1 & 2 propaganda. It's literally about a dumb guy who's good at boxing.
The ending, Rocky defeats Ivan Drago. It's and it's not a coincidence that this movie was released in the late years of the Cold War and everything.
Bro that's Rocky 4, I was talking about the first movie.
First Rambo was anti war as fuck.
Kinda, except when Rambo's commanding officer shows up Rambo is all
> And I did what I had to do to win! But somebody wouldn't let us win! And I come back to the world and I see all those maggots at the airport, protesting me, spitting. Calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me? Who are they? Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about!
I think that's still a critique though. Rambo is Frankenstein's monster, he's not a speaker of truths. The military turned a human into a killing machine, then threw him away when they didn't need him, leaving him stripped of any ability to survive in the non-combat world. I think it's sympathetic to Rambo's perspective without being an endorsement.
Whether he deserves sympathy is another question, I guess. But I think there's a way to humanize serial killers that can be appropriate and interesting.
Many Americans were drafted and had no choice but to go to Vietnam. They're critiquing the liberal anti-war messages that often just became hurling insults are poor young men that were drafted to a war they wanted nothing to do with.
also forrest gump
You don't really have to use a specific example. Almost every single US film is a propaganda.
Propaganda comes in two ways, it's either "look at bad this was, or how good you have it, etc", meaning it presents a reality that happened (or portrayed in that way).
Or propaganda can be, "imagine if things were different! Gosh, aren't you so lucky!" Stuff like that is things like "handmaids tale" which is basically, "can you imagine if you weren't so lucky to live in this particular timeline?"
American Sniper is literally a remake of the movie in a movie in Tarantinos Inglorious Basterds about the Nazi Sniper.
Like Red Dawn I respect American Sniper for having the balls to follow the bad guys and I loved the ending where they unceremoniously killed the murderer back in his safe homeland. Wonderful irony.
See also every marvel movie ever
We need another Hollywood movie telling the story about how some rich Hollywood prick was actually really oppressed.
Or, Or.. another superhero movie produced with funding and help from the US military that just **happens** to glorify American "freedom" and portrays the US military in a positive light.
They literally make movies about a superhero called
Imagine if any countries on US' naughty list had a character like that.
Ironically he is a guy created using a Nazi-like human experiment to become a perfect "arian" man.
If they put Tom Cruise in as the lead actor, as an American leading the CCP to victory, then it wouldn't be propaganda. All the critics would love the film.
>*An American military advisor embraces the Chinese culture he was hired to destroy after he is captured in battle. Starring Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey, Emma Stone. IMDb rating 9.1*
Id like that.
I try to have a good taste in film but just watching tom cruise be goofy and do stunt just makes me so happy
*Edge of Tomorrow*, but with Juche necromancy.
Still pissed at the Last Samurai for doing this. The history of the Satsuma Rebellion was really insulted with this movie.
They did the same with 47 ronins, though that one was more fantasy, like the fuck some white keanu ass was doing there at all.
Is Tom Cruise still a scientologist?
Yes. You can't leave that easily especially when you are a high ranking member like cruise.
He probably doesn't want to, they treat celebrities like gods for PR
And they are tax exempt and get millions in donations.
you don't understand
BATMAN is a good oligarch
I honestly laughed at the way Nolan made Batman’s father out to be. A nice millionaire who wants to “help” the city as he sits in his mansion in safety and luxury. Then the city kills him and rightfully so. The most realistic depiction of not just Bruce Wayne’s father for any billionaire is in Joker with them taking the quasi-Trump approach. That’s how billionaires are. Pretentious assholes with a chip on their shoulder.
we live in a society
It is propaganda, but the general public has, ironically, been propagandized into believing that propaganda is inherently bad or lies.
Exactly. Propaganda isn't inherently bad. If it's being used to convince the population to support good things, then it is also a good thing.
wtf is a white billionaire class? just call it bourgeois.
American Sniper was a documentary apparently
Also check out the [trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFl3D_SzKyU). It looks awesome
The Internationale playing in the background. Excellent.
Holy fuck this looks amazing! The revolutionary fervor inside of me is over 9000! LETS START A PEOPLES REVOLUTION!... sorry I’ll calm down.
God I forgot this was reddit
"propaganda unlike those Marvel superhero movies"
sick! when are we getting english subs???
Subs are available and the movie is free on smart cinema
Why do they always add something that makes socialist achievements sound bad?
"The Soviet Union increased quality of life tenfold, BUT no freedoms"
"China's economy is growing at a rapid pace, BUT no freedoms"
"New Chinese movie teaching of the struggles the CPC went through has grossed 13 million USD on its first day, BUT is propaganda"
Westerners trying to cope and even rewrite history to maintain the demonization of Communism
You know why
what is it about? poster looks badass :D
from the trailer it seems to be about the May fourth movement that leads to the foundation of the CPC
awesome socialist history best history
anyone know where you can watch it?
Funny how a war film in America isn’t propaganda but once it’s about Chinese history it’s suddenly propaganda lol
They are projecting as always, their war movies literally changed the perception of people in Europe about who actually defeated the nazis, they reinvent reality when it's not convenient for the US : [https://imgur.com/gallery/fKwODlr](https://imgur.com/gallery/fKwODlr)
All the movies that get material assistance from the department of defense have to rewrite their script to give a positive image of the military, there's a guy called Tom Secker that uses Freedom of Information Act requests to uncover that, he uploads the documents on his website, [spyculture.com](https://spyculture.com) (the video about Tom Hanks is not some satanic conspiracy bs btw, the title and image are just clickbait).
US: THIS PROPAGANDA
Also US: https://youtu.be/CajjpdHYneM
Hot take: Red Son (both the comic and the movie) = overrated libshit trash.
Lol ahistorical trash
No way is Stalin shorter than superman
Stalin was like 5'5" / 165 cm.
Short comrades rise up I guess.

When this hitting theaters on the wrong side of the pacific?
It's on the Smart Cinema app
Where do I get this app ? When I looked it up on Google play store it comes up with Disney+ ??
Are you in the US? I guess it's region specific :(
I'm in Australia, but still could be regional :( what a shame
I can download the APK and install it but need a US phone number to get access to an account 😭
Can’t wait to see it. It looks fantastic.
Is there a way to watch this in the US without pirating it?
China is culturally genociding Hollywood's pointless spin-offs, remakes and sequels.
"Releasing at the time of hollywood films like cruella, peter rabbit 2 and a quiet place 2 "
Wow what serious fucking competition eh?/s
Its like hollywood isnt even trying
Where can I watch this?
Every non-western war movie = propaganda
probably on IQIYI sometimes later
Theres the spanish cuevana if you want. Maybe they have it.
The hollywood movies suck dick no wonder. Whoever approved those films' distribution should be replaced.
yo guys what are some other good 'propaganda' films? I'll give em a watch
Faith Makes Great is an awesome anthology about local/national heroes. Some are better than others, but overall I'd give it a 7.5/10.
The Founding of the Party is also a good movie imo, but some people say the propaganda elements are a little heavy handed which honestly I kinda get. I like communist propaganda though, makes me feel good.
You can find it all on youtube with subtitles
Give assembly a try too. It's a true story about a guy who fought in both the Chinese civil war and the Korean war. Although it portrays the heroism of the PLA, it doesn't hesitate to show the darker aspects of the fighting, as well as the human element
My People, My Country 我和我的祖国
>cruella, a quiet place part Ii, peter rabbit Ii
Let's not get too excited, it's not like it won against strong competition.
Notice how all of these are sequels/spin offs? Capitalism breeding innovation as usual
Cruella and Quiet place is also a strong major title wdym. also if we're talking about major movies 1921 also grosses more on it's opening day than the Godzilla vs Kong, Tom and Jerry, The conjuring and Mortal Kombat movies
Cruella is actually pretty good lol, it’s feminine version of Joker with joaquin phoenix
And the concept behind quiet place is pretty unique
Can anyone in America get it?
Releasing in cinemas next week
If IMDb user 'ronew-10420' is in this thread thank you for your amazing review.
I wonder if they consider Saving Private Ryan a propaganda movie as well.
Or every other Hollywood war flick. The CIA and the US military literally have to be consulted before any of those films go ahead. But hey, freedom and democracy
In capitalist America, Tony Stark and that Captain fella saves the people.
In Communist China, the people saves the people.
I’m all for the rise of eastern media.
[standing in front of a huge poster for *Zero Dark Thirty*] those devious celestials with their propaganda!
funny how its always propaganda when its a different narrative than the liberal one.
I prefer to watch animated media but this looks sick.
There is this great Chinese animated movie New Gods: Nezha Reborn I watched recently. Have you watched it? It's a reimagining of a Chinese mythological story as a critique of capitalism in a steampunkish futuristic version of pre war Republican China.
Thanks, sounds interesting, I'll give it a watch.
Have you checked wish dragon?
No but I will now, thanks.
American Sniper pisses me off so much
So who has the link with English subs *eye emoji *
Propaganda? At WORST it's a historical drama. If it counts as propaganda, then we might as well count at least 50% of American films propaganda and that's not counting Michael Bay's giant dumps on filmography that he passes off as movies.
Any idea where I can torrent this or watch it online?
original historical drama (i’m assuming, i know nothing about the movie) outperforms 3 american spin offs....what kind of communist trickery is going on
how do i get the "asshole" flair? i see everybody has a flair, i wanna be special too
I'm hoping that they will release subtitles for it
'Propaganda film' 😂 cope... Bit like propaganda films like: Saving private Ryan, American sniper, zero dark thirty, rambo, armagedon, hacksaw ridge... I could go on and on with the shit Hollywood pumps out
> Chinese Propaganda Film
tfw your film industry is subsidized by the Pentagon but its not propaganda because the troops wear fancy costumes and shoot lightning
Chinese Cinema is bigger than American and European Cinema combined.
What’s the movie about? And are there English subtitles?
