Death is truly the greatest character Gaiman ever wrote.

ElectricTurtlez

The audiobook performance of this chapter was fantastic. Kat Dennings performance as Death was spot on!

Thunderous_Ball_Slap

That was a great story. I'm from the bay area, & always walked by the Emperor Norton Hotel in SF but never knew who it was named after til I read this. Leave it to Gaiman to teach me about an American legend from my own backyard.

Son-of-the-Dragon

My favorite detail about Norton that wasn't included in this story is that he actually made a declaration wherein it was a misdemeanor offense to call San Francisco "Frisco". I have a cousin in SF and she always loses her shit when people call it Frisco and it's so funny to think she has a legal basis to be pissed

"His madness keeps him sane."

the wiki page for Emperor Norton is great. > "On the reeking pavement, in the darkness of a moonless night, under the dripping rain ... Norton I, by the grace of God, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, departed this life".

FoolishOrder

This is one of those scenes that can pretty much make me cry on command lol. I'd also add a recommendation for the audio version! Not all the voices match the ones in my head (which is fine, of course), but I will probably always hear Kat Dennings as Death from now on. And while it's almost entirely faithful to the comic, audio lets them do some cool extra things, like having Orpheus actually sing his song during the Thermidor chapter for instance.

There will be many more favorite moments to come.

The entire issue was great. I ended up doing more research on our only Emperor and really learned some things. Read "Death" by Gaiman for more excellent stories when you finish the Sandman run. Death https://www.amazon.com/dp/1401247164/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_X9GKX3RXCJTEAKH63MPD

Darkwingxy

Read it all, it was excellent

America needs a new Emperor.
